SYMPTOMS of rabies in dogs are usually slow in terms of its progression. The average incubation period of dog rabies from the time of exposure up to the point it reaches the brain takes place to a minimum of 3 weeks to a maximum of 8 weeks.
Dog rabies SYMPTOMS are notable only after the virus has reached the brain. After reaching the brain, the virus can now be transmitted through the dog’s saliva.
In general, rabies SYMPTOMS are manifested in the three different stages of infection. The first stage is called the prodromal stage. This stage lasts for about 3 days. Usual SYMPTOMS that can be seen in dogs during the prodromal stage are the following: 1) they prefer to be alone most of the time, 2) they become nervous than usual and 3) in some cases, they have fever. But the most obvious change during this stage is the sudden reversal in the attitude of the dog. Friendly dogs suddenly become less friendly and aggressive. On the other hand, the aggressive dogs become the friendly and affectionate ones.
The second stage of rabies infection is the furious stage. Dogs in the furious stage take place from 1 to 7 days. In this stage, common SYMPTOMS are the following: 1) the dogs become irritable and restless than usual and 2) they react to almost everything they hear or see. This stage is called the furious stage because this is the time when the infected dogs become very aggressive that usually results to dog bite attacks.
The last stage is called the dumb or paralytic stage. The most visible of all SYMPTOMS during this stage is the dog’s excessive salivation. In this stage, the nervous system of the dog is affected which will ultimately result to its paralysis and eventual demise.
