Rabies is a disease which affects the nervous system of the human or animal affected by the rabies virus. Rabies can be fatal even to humans especially if the infection is not detected early on. Animals, such as dogs, cats, skunks, raccoons and foxes are the most common carriers of rabies. When rabid saliva from an infected animal gets in contact to the broken skin of humans, then the rabid virus is acquired.
Rabies vaccines are available for both animals and humans. Owners of pet dogs and cats usually have them vaccinated by vets in order to prevent rabies infection. The rabies vaccine is usually administered to the dogs and cats yearly for full protection. Rabies vaccines in human can also be acquired in local clinics and hospitals. Protection against rabies is even promoted by law in many countries. People whose work makes them in direct or possible contact with rabid wild animals such as foxes and skunks are required to have vaccines against rabies. These occupations include lab workers, vets and other animal handlers. International travelers who can get contact with dogs and be subjected to limited medical care are also usually required to get their rabies shots before leaving their country of origin.
The vaccine against rabies is very useful in terms of protecting those who are susceptible to rabies. Yet, some people who already became infected by rabies can still be vaccinated and saved from danger if done at the right time. Vaccines for rabies can also be administered immediately after a rabid animal’s bite.
