The symptoms of RABIES in animals and humans are almost alike. A person bitten by a rabid animal will show the show similar signs of infection. Infected animals undergo the three phases of infection namely the prodronal phase, the acute neurological phase and the comatose phase. During the three phases, animals with RABIES are expected to manifest the following: dizziness, fever, feeling of isolation, aggressiveness, inability to sleep normally, excessive salivation, sudden urge for water and the over-eagerness to bite.
On the other hand, people infected by RABIES usually show its symptoms from 2 to 12 months which starts at the time he was first bitten until the first flu-like signs of infection appear. But there are some cases that the symptoms of infection will not show until two years. The common symptoms of are the following: paralysis of the body, brain malfunction, extreme feeling of anxiety, inability to sleep normally, feeling of confusion and paranoia, being too aggressive most of the time, experiencing hallucinations and craving for water all the time.
Hydrophobia or fear of water is one effect of RABIES that is common both to animals and man. This is due to the inability of the victim to swallow any liquid because of the paralysis of the throat and jaw. As a result, infected animals and humans can’t satisfy their thirst.
In cases where RABIES wasn’t detected and treated at once, death usually comes after 10 days of infection. There are very few reports of victims, animals and man alike, who have survived the deadly virus. That is why it is very important to know the symptoms as early as possible to avoid the complications.
