The course of the rabies disease is very similar for people as it is for animals. Many people can have a 30-60 day symptom free period in which the disease is experiencing its incubation period. Some patients have experienced no symptoms of rabies infections for as long as one year. These are rare cases, in the vast majority of cases in which humans are inflected with the rabies virus will experience some type of rabies symptoms within 30 days from exposure.
The first series of symptoms of rabies in people is that an infected person will lose their appetite and begin to experience extreme fatigue. The fatigue that is a result of symptoms of rabies is often followed by severe headaches and continued persistent fevers. Because the rabies virus attacks the nervous system many people who are experiencing symptoms of rabies, experience painful or “itchy” sensations, often these symptoms are only at the site of exposure but can be so severe that they cause insomnia in the patient.
Shortly after symptoms of rabies begin to appear, so will signs of damage to the central nervous system. Many patients experience severe symptoms of rabies that start with hyperactivity and disorientation, but grow to full blown hallucinations and dementia, later to turn into paralysis. The final symptoms of rabies are that many patients will fall into a coma, which can only be sustained through life support measures.
